24/7 Emergency Service

Our RMS Cooling technicians will tell you most Central Florida homeowners never expect their HVAC system to get damaged in a hurricane. The whole idea that their system needs replacing due to the storms shocks many. To avoid this situation, here’s what we recommend doing instead.

Have the Outdoor Unit Secured

Contact a licensed HVAC company about securing your unit to the concrete pad, and if possible, cover it with a manufacturer-approved cage. If your home or property is in a flood-prone area, have the unit elevated or barriers installed before hurricane season begins.

Shut Down the System Before the Storm

Turn off your system at the breaker to avoid power surge damage. That prevents your unit from running during outages. Also, thermostats and surge protectors that are connected to the unit need to be unplugged. This step protects critical components from costly replacement repairs.

Inspect and Seal Ductwork

If you’re unsure about your ductwork’s condition, schedule a quick inspection before hurricane season begins. That assessment will uncover any visible leaks or disconnected ducts, especially in attics, garages, or crawl spaces where debris or moisture can enter easily.

Clear the Area Around Your Unit

Remove loose branches, patio furniture, grills, and any other objects that the wind could easily launch at your HVAC unit. Even small items will cause excessive damage if they collide with delicate fins or fan blades. Give your unit a minimum of three feet of clearance on all sides.

After Every Storm Always Inspect Before Restarting

Once the storm passes, don’t restart your system immediately. First, check for visible damage or flooding around the outdoor unit. If there’s standing water or you suspect any damage, call a licensed HVAC professional before turning anything back on.

Don’t Let a Hurricane Destroy Your HVAC Unit

Taking these steps before a hurricane hits will save you thousands in unnecessary repairs and let you return to a comfortable home faster once the skies clear. A little planning now means less stress, less downtime, and a whole lot more peace of mind later.
