Frozen coils are a common issue our RMS Cooling technicians encounter when inspecting and repairing air conditioning units. Customers often ask why this happens and what causes the coils to freeze. There are several reasons for these problems.

The main point to understand is that ice buildup blocks your air conditioner’s ability to absorb heat, leading to poor cooling, higher energy costs, and eventually, system failure. Identifying the primary causes is the first step we will discuss today.

Cause #1: Restricted Airflow

Poor airflow is a common cause of frozen coils. When warm air does not circulate properly over the coils, the refrigerant inside gets too cold and begins to freeze the nearby moisture.

Common triggers include:

  • Dirty or clogged air filters
  • Closed or blocked vents
  • Malfunctioning blower fans
  • Dirty evaporator coils

Solution: Replace or clean your filters every 30–60 days, keep vents unblocked, and schedule regular maintenance to clean the coils and inspect airflow parts.

Cause #2: Low Refrigerant Levels

When refrigerant levels are too low, often caused by leaks, the pressure inside your system drops. That causes temperatures to fall below freezing, quickly resulting in coil icing.

Warning signs:

  • Warm air from vents
  • Bubbling or hissing sounds
  • Longer cooling cycles

Solution: Immediately, contact a licensed HVAC professional to inspect for leaks. Make the needed repairs and recharge the system according to the manufacturer’s unit specifications.

Cause #3: Thermostat or Control Issues

If your thermostat malfunctions or is not calibrated correctly, it causes your air conditioner to run nonstop without cycling off, which overcools the coils and leads to ice forming.

Solution: Have your thermostat checked for accuracy or upgrade to a smart thermostat for better control. A technician can recalibrate or replace faulty units.

Act Quickly to Prevent Long-Term Damage

If your air conditioner coils freeze, turn off the system immediately to prevent any further damage. Never chip away at the ice manually, as it will harm the coil fins. Contact a professional air conditioning company to inspect and repair the unit if necessary.
